Achieving Financial Inclusion: Opening a Bank Account After Homelessness
It might not sound like a big deal to some people, but for me, this is huge. For the longest time, opening a bank account felt like trying to break into Fort Knox. The problem? I didn’t have the “right” ID.
In Ontario, a health card isn’t accepted as valid identification unless you’re dealing with healthcare. And switching my driver’s license for the Ontario Photo Card (that little purple one)? Not an option. If I gave up my commercial driver’s license, I’d lose it permanently. Thanks to a 2016 rule change—just one year after I got it—surrendering that license would mean starting the whole process over again from scratch. And let me tell you, that kind of money? I don’t have it.
I finally decided to try one of those online-only “virtual” banks. No branches, no lines—and more importantly, no fees. Since Ontario Works gives me just $343 a month, I need to stretch every dollar. Paying bank fees is like tossing money into the wind.
I applied about two or three weeks ago. Everything was going smoothly—until it came time to verify my ID. My license wasn’t valid anymore, and without that, the process came to a screeching halt.
First try: I sent in my temporary driver’s license and my expired photo card.
Rejected.
Second try: same docs, plus my health card.
Rejected again.
I knew health cards weren’t typically accepted, but I was hoping it might spark an alternate route for ID verification—and it actually did! The bank referred me to Canada Post for in-person ID verification. I went, handed over my temporary license and expired card again... and boom, they accepted it!
Finally, my ID was verified. I could set up my debit card and online banking.
Why does this matter so much? Because without a bank account, you basically can’t get a job. Almost every employer pays by direct deposit now. I couldn’t seriously start job hunting until this was sorted.
So yeah, this isn’t just a bank account. It’s a door opening.
And honestly? I believe God opens the right doors at the right time—and closes the ones that aren’t meant for us. This was one of those moments. A small victory, maybe. But a massive step forward for me.
