Since arriving in Ottawa, I’ve been trying to secure income, starting with Ontario Works. The process used to be quick—apply in person, get a decision fast. Now, it’s centralized to an online or phone application, which should make things more efficient. But instead of using technology to streamline approvals, they just moved the paperwork around, leaving fewer people to process more applications. The result? Longer wait times.
I was told four business days. It’s been two weeks. No money, except for the kindness of a few people who care about me. I don’t panhandle, and I won’t start—I just want to work. But without funds to renew my driver’s license, I can’t even open a bank account, let alone get a job.
Ontario Works is meant to help people get back on their feet, yet the system seems designed to keep them stuck. Even the administrators dislike the new process. If both clients and staff hate it, who exactly benefits?
