My Ontario Works interview turned out far better than I had feared. Despite my concerns about not having a driver's license and lacking a bank account due to insufficient photo ID, the conversation was refreshingly sensible. I'm working to sort out these hurdles—it’s a slow and costly process—but there's a glimmer of hope. I’ve secured an appointment with Employment Ontario this Friday, where they might help cover the costs of replacing my driver's license and obtaining my MTO Medical. Still, as with all government processes, progress is measured in appointments and paperwork.
Walking away from the Ontario Works office, I felt a mix of relief and resignation. I had dealt with someone who understood my situation, even if it seemed that others might not be as sympathetic. This pattern, I suspect, might repeat itself.
I then headed back to the shelter for lunch, where the food is not only decent but free—a small blessing. After eating, I needed to use a bathroom. The ones at the office were far from inviting, so I opted for a detour to a Starbucks on Bank St. For $5.25, I got access to a pristine restroom and treated myself to a hot chocolate—much needed after too much coffee earlier. I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the little resources that allowed me that small moment of comfort.
On top of that, I’ve applied for a housing program through the YMCA. I’m desperately seeking a change—my current living arrangements make it nearly impossible to foster a healthy relationship with my children, and the daily check-ins between 4-6 PM only add to the strain.
Lastly, I’m in need of a reliable laptop. While I make do with borrowed Chromebooks from the library, I crave a personal machine—preferably Windows-based—that can handle my needs now and into the foreseeable future. If anyone knows of any programs or resources that could help with this, please share in the comments.
