Yesterday, I set aside time to take my children on an immersive virtual tour of the Centre Block of Parliament. Though we couldn’t step inside in person—since the iconic building is undergoing extensive restoration—the tour offered a fascinating glimpse into the heart of Canada’s democracy.
Parliament Hill has stood as a symbol of governance and history for over 150 years. The Centre Block, home to the House of Commons and the Senate, has witnessed pivotal moments in our nation’s history—from passionate debates that shaped our laws to the resilience shown in rebuilding after the fire of 1916. While a virtual tour can’t replace the grandeur of standing beneath the soaring Gothic Revival ceilings or walking through its storied halls, it still provided an opportunity to connect with the past.
For my older children, the experience brought their classroom lessons to life. Seeing the chambers where leaders have shaped the country made history feel more tangible. My younger ones, while not quite able to grasp the significance, still enjoyed the interactive elements of the tour. And for me, any time spent with my children—sharing knowledge and experiences—is invaluable.
Even if one of my kids wasn’t entirely captivated, I know it was worthwhile. They weren’t just learning about Parliament; they were sharing a moment with me, exploring the legacy of Canadian democracy together.
If you're curious about Canada's Parliament, I highly recommend the tour. It’s free, but you’ll need to book in advance online: https://rts.parl.ca/. Whether you're a history buff or just looking for a meaningful way to spend time with family, it's an experience worth having.
